French Toast Crunch Coming Back to Breakfast Cereal Pantheon

French Toast Crunch is coming back to stores after an eight-year hiatus, delighting fans of the sugary breakfast cereal from coast to coast.

General Mills, parent company of both French Toast Crunch and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, announced that some stores have already received shipments, and that full distribution is expected by the end of January 2015.

"We have been overwhelmed by the consumer conversations, requests, and passion for the cereal to come back," said Waylon Good, marketing manager for General Mills.

"It's amazing to see how nostalgia for brands from generations past can really take on a life of its own — demonstrating a real desire to have these products back in our lives. We are so excited to give fans a chance to experience the cereal as they did many years ago, and also to introduce it to a new generation of French Toast Crunchers!"

French Toast Crunch was introduced in 1995, complete with cartoon mascot Wendell, who was seen on the front of the box whipping up a batch of the cinnamon-syrup sensation. When the cereal left the breakfast aisle, a steady cult following cropped up that began a constant drumbeat of calls to bring it back.

Some fans went as far as to start buying up remaining stock listed on online auction sites for exorbitant prices, while others smuggled "Croque pain doré" in from Canada — where it was still legal in production.

According to Time magazine, the reintroduction of the continental Toast Crunch "comes after a string of food revival tours, including Coca-Cola’s decision to bring back Surge, Mars’ reintroduction of Crispy M&M’s, and Burger King’s resurgence of the Yumbo hoagie after a 40-year hiatus."

Now that French Toast Crunch is back in its rightful place in the pantheon of tiny breakfast cereals that mimic normal-sized foods (Cookie Crisp, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc.), some are calling for the return of S'mores Crunch too.
