In France, hamburger sales have surged to 1.5 billion, with burgers appearing on more and more restaurant menus and surpassing traditional French foods in 2017.
Hamburgers of all kinds now appear on the menus of 85 percent of all restaurants in France, and sales have passed the traditional jambom-beurre, or ham-and-butter, sandwiches, Forbes reported.
“We have been talking about euphoria and craziness for three years now, and this year, we do not know how to describe this steamroller effect,” director of Gira Conseil Bernard Boutboul told AFP. (Gira Conseil is a restaurant consultant firm.)
French cuisine has long turned up its nose at lowly hamburgers, which were seen as unsophisticated and just plain bad, Forbes reported. But French restaurateurs have elevated burgers by pairing them with fancy cheeses and serving them in some of the best restaurants, AFP reported.
Even fast food burgers have been embraced by the French: McDonald's' 1,400 locations in France make the country the most profitable for the chain outside the U.S., AFP reported.
In French McDonald’s locations, however, patrons can get McCamembert and McBaguette burgers with Dijon mustard, French salads, and macaroons for dessert. They also can drink beer with meals.
Hamburgers also are popular on the food trucks that are becoming a staple on city streets in France, AFP reported.
About 30 percent of burgers sold in France are in fast-food restaurants, with the other 70 percent coming from traditional sit-down restaurants, The Telegraph reported.
Americans on Twitter were not surprised that the French have come around to the magic of hamburgers.
