A Fox Lake shooting that killed a police officer in Illinois Tuesday has led to a massive manhunt as officials scramble to find three suspects.
Helicopters, Illinois law enforcement agencies, the regional SWAT team, dog teams, and K-9 units swarmed Fox Lake on Tuesday as the hunt for the
three men ensued, according to Fox News. The shooting incident began when the officer, who has not yet been publically identified, stopped a car with “three suspicious subjects” just before 8 a.m. and radioed in for backup.
“His backup arrived shortly thereafter and found him injured with a gunshot wound,” said Lake County Sheriff’s spokesman
Christopher Covelli, according to The Associated Press. “The officer has succumbed to his injuries and passed away.”
The officer’s gun and other equipment had been stolen, and the police officers, FBI agents, and other law enforcement officers called to the scene have continued their pursuit for the three men, two of whom are white, and
one of whom is black, according to NBC Chicago.
As the search continues and the suspects are still on the loose, many local schools and establishments in Fox Lake have been put on lockdown, including the Ingleside Metra station and Grant Community High School, which issued this statement: “Police matter is occurring in the community and for the safety of our students and staff they have requested we remain locked down,” according to NBC Chicago.
This shooting proves to be the latest in an increasing surge of law enforcement officer shootings, the most recent of which occurred in Texas on Friday at a gas station where a Texas deputy was shot, according to Fox News.
“As information continues to come in about the shooting of another police officer in the line of duty in Fox Lake, I hope we can all remain calm and pray for the officer’s family and the other officers in harms-way right now,” said State Rep. Barbara Wheeler in a statement. “Eleven police officers have needlessly lost their lives since Aug. 20th alone in America because of shootings and sadly our communities have been directly impacted today.”
