Fox announced last week that it has canceled "The Following," the Kevin Bacon drama that endured three seasons amid eroding viewership numbers.
"The Following" steadily lost viewership since its
impressive start in 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Even though the show most recently attracted 5.5 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49, the show's same-day ratings have tumbled.
"'The Following' was quite the big deal when it premiered," The Hollywood Reporter noted. "In addition to the series' graphic violence and gore-nabbing headlines and prompting debate among critics, the star power of Kevin Bacon helped usher in the current age of shorter-order dramas toplined by cinema-caliber names."
Fox reportedly dangled "The Following" and also the newly canceled "The Mindy Project" in front of Hulu in an attempt to find a new home for both series, but the
streaming service wouldn’t bite, according to Entertainment Weekly.
After the cancellation announcement, Bacon took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.
Other fans expressed sadness over the "The Following's" departure, with some holding out hope that it could perhaps be saved by another streaming service.
