Jeff Buck, an 18-year-old firefighter who was trapped when a porch roof collapsed during a fire in central Pennsylvania, has died.
The Clearfield Area High School senior was a member of the Lawrence Township Fire Company and among three firefighters who were on the porch when the roof collapsed on March 3.
He was being treated at UPMC Altoona and died Monday.
Residents throughout the area planned to turn on their porch lights at 7 p.m. Tuesday to
honor the fallen firefighter, Centre Daily Times reported. Jody Lansberry Becker of Clearfield created the Porch Lights for Buck memorial, and word spread on Facebook, with more than 14,000 people signing up to join the event.
The community began rallying in support of Buck before his death, raising more than $9,000 in a Boots for Buck drive on Saturday and more than $3,500 with a breakfast buffet on Sunday, the newspaper said in an earlier report.
More fundraisers are planned to help the 18-year-old firefighter's family: Scotto’s Pizzeria in Clearfield said it will donate half of its total sales on March 16 to the Jeff Buck Foundation, and Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub will host a salute and boot drive on March 17.
News of Buck’s death was shared on a Facebook page called Prayers for Firefighter Jeff Buck.
Twitter users shared condolences.
