Ferris Wheel Accident: Crutches Tipped Seat, Spilling 2 Kids?

By    |   Monday, 25 August 2014 07:29 AM EDT

Police are investigating whether a teenager's crutches might have been the cause of a Ferris wheel seat at a Michigan fair tipping and spilling her and her 8-year-old brother about 15 feet to the ground.

The Ann Arbor News reported Saturday that a 16-year-old girl boarded the ride with crutches Thursday night at the Chelsea Community Fair. Investigators say they could have slid out and lodged in a way that caused the cab to tip.

The brother has been released from the hospital. The girl has not.

They fell from the Ferris wheel when it was at about the 3 or 4 o'clock position as the ride went clockwise, both police and witnesses have said.

The Associated Press reported Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth as saying officers will speak with the girl before determining the cause.

“We’re just trying to figure out if that played a role,” Toth said. “We’re pretty sure it did.”

Witnesses say one of her knees was bandaged before the accident.

The ride reopened Friday. Chelsea is about 15 miles west of Ann Arbor.
