Missouri State Representative-to-be Cora Faith Walker of Ferguson, in a shocking letter to her new Capital colleagues, has accused the state's only other black representative-to-be of raping her, reported The Washington Post.

Walker introduced herself to legislative leader in the letter before claiming the rape accusations against Steven Roberts, Jr.

“My name is Cora Faith Walker,” the attorney wrote to Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson and two other House leaders. “I will be in the Capitol in January as the Representative of the 74th District.”

“Earlier this week, I reported a sexual assault to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department,” Walker wrote. “I named my rapist as Steven Roberts, Jr., who hopes to be in the Capitol next year as the Representative of the 77th District.”

The letter was emailed to Missouri House leadership on Friday, according to The Washington Post, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was the first to put out the report.

According to the Post-Dispatch, the leadership of the Missouri Legislature has been hit with sexual scandals over the past two years, so this issue is not new to them.

Walker asked the legislators to not allow Roberts to take his seat until “this investigation is complete.”

The three legislative leaders issued statements on Saturday, responding to Walker’s letter. Richardson called the allegations “disturbing” and said he would advise the criminal investigation, The Dispatch noted.

The three leaders, who are Democrats like Roberts, also suggested that Roberts drop out.

In an interview, Walker said she wanted her story told without holding back, as she wants to give other rape victims courage and desires to see changes made to the Jefferson City environment that “perpetuates gender violence and rape culture.”

“I felt a moral responsibility to speak out,” Walker said. “The idea or the thought of me trying to just bury it is one I could not live with.”

Walker said that the alleged assault took place either on the evening of Aug. 26 or the early morning of Aug. 27 in a St. Louis apartment, The Dispatch noted. She said she had gone there to meet Roberts to discuss the possibility of working together in the upcoming legislative session.

She said she met Roberts around 9:30 p.m. and woke up in a bed there the next morning.

“I had no recollection of why I was still there,” Walker said. She said that she had two glasses of wine that night, but remembers nothing after the second glass.

Both Walker and Roberts are running uncontested in November.
