U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio cautioned that national defense could be in jeopardy if the United States doesn’t reduce federal spending, the
Findlay Courier reported Thursday.
Jordan made his remarks to the Findlay Kiwanis, and in a meeting with editors and reporters for the newspaper. The congressman emphasized how serious Republicans are about making meaningful spending cuts.
If interest rates rise, he said, paying the national debt could overwhelm the U.S. budget, forcing the country to limit its spending on defense.
"The bad news is, we're broke," Jordan said. "The window of time to fix it is actually closing rapidly. ... If we don't get a handle on the financial situation, our fiscal situation ... it is all going to cave in."
Fixing the federal spending crisis will require sacrifice, he said. Even so, he said the voters’ mandate in November to cut spending was clear.
"In my time in public life, I have never seen the American people more ready, more receptive, more willing to do the tough love things that have to be done to fix the place," he said.
