The "Fearless Girl" statue that has been staring down the iconic "Charging Bull" statue near the intersection of Broadway and Morris Street in the New York's financial district since 2017 will be moved to the New York Stock Exchange, ABC News reported Thursday.
The "Fearless Girl" statue, commissioned by the State Street Global Advisors and installed on the eve of International Women's Day last year, was meant to be a symbol to encourage more corporations to add women to their boards, the network said.
The creator of the "Charging Bull" statue, Arturo Di Modica, charged that the "Fearless Girl" statue infringed on his famous bronze statue, which has been in place since 1989, ABC News noted. The bull has long symbolized stock market strength, according to Investopedia.com.
"Since 'Fearless Girl's' placement, more than 150 companies have added a female director to their boards," State Street Global Advisors chief Cyrus Taraporevala said of the statue created by sculptor Kristen Visbal, per ABC News. "Our hope is that by moving her closer to the NYSE she will encourage more companies to take action and, more broadly, that she will continue to inspire people from all walks of life on the issue of gender diversity."
Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement that the city is proud of the "Fearless Girls" statue and what it represents.
"She is a powerful symbol of the need for change at the highest levels of corporate America —and she will become a durable part of our city’s civic life," de Blasio said in the statement. "This move to a new location will improve access for visitors and ensure that her message and impact continues to be heard. We're grateful to State Street for their partnership in keeping the Fearless Girl here in New York City."
Thomas Farley, president of the New York Stock Exchange, said in the same statement that the exchange would be a "fitting home" for "Fearless Girl."
"The historic corner of Wall & Broad saw the swearing in of our country's first president and the birth of our capital markets, and is joined now by a striking symbol of our ongoing journey toward greater equality, broader inclusion, and a more perfect union," Farley said in the statement.
