The search for a father and his toddler son swept out to sea on Sunday by a huge wave in Oregon has been called off.
The Coast Guard suspended its search for 31-year-old Jayson Dean Thomas and his 3-year-old son following an unsuccessful 22-hour search north of Cape Blanco, reported The Associated Press.
Thomas and his son were walking along the beach when they were swept into the water at around 1 p.m., reported CBS affiliate KBNZ. The boy’s mother was also on the beach and called authorities after witnessing the incident.
The Coast Guard used helicopters and boats to search for the pair. By Monday authorities were only able to find the father’s jacket and the baby’s carrier.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Amanda Norcross said the search was called off before noon on Monday after search crews and state troopers scoured a 112-mile radius, KTVZ noted.
State Police spokesman Capt. Bill Fugate said at the time Thomas and his son were swept into the ocean the condition of the water was “rough.”
