The ninth movie in the "Fast and the Furious" franchise has had its release delayed a year, from April 19, 2019, to April 10, 2020.
No reason was given for the delay, which was announced on Twitter, although The Hollywood Reporter noted the film doesn’t yet have a director. Many franchise stars are confirmed as returning for the movie, but it wasn’t confirmed yet whether Dwayne Johnson would return.
“Furious 10” is scheduled to be released April 2, 2021, and it is unclear whether that date also will be moved back.
“Fate of the Furious,” the eighth movie in the serious, had the biggest global launch of all time and earned $1.238 billion worldwide.
The franchise has grossed more than $5 billion worldwide, with “Furious 7” at the top of the list at $1.5 billion.
F. Gary Gray directed the eighth installment but has not been signed on to direct “Furious 9.”
There has been talk of a spinoff with Johnson and Jason Statham, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
The new “Furious 9” release date falls in the middle of the 2020 primary election cycle, which could be interesting if Johnson does decide to run for president as has been speculated by some (but not confirmed by him or anyone else as of yet).
Some on Twitter say they can’t wait for the next installment, while others wonder why they keep making them.
