A fan was impaled at a Chevelle concert Friday at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago after falling from a catwalk during the performance.
Kyle Kirchhoff, 24, was impaled on two metal rods, causing
serious chest wounds, the Toronto Sun reported. He was transported to Weiss Memorial Hospital where he was declared dead.
Kirchhoff and two of his friends reportedly found a door on the second-floor balcony of the ballroom with access to the
catwalks above the stage, Music Times reported. Attempting to get a better view of the performance, the fans walked out onto it and that's when Kirchhoff fell eight feet.
Police stopped the concert to tend to Kirchhoff, and the remainder of the show was canceled. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Members of the rock group Chevelle released a statement
explaining what happened at the concert on Facebook.
“We want to thank our Chicago fans for their respect of the authorities and for understanding that these decisions made by the authorities were out of our control,” the statement read. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chevelle fan Kyle Kirchhoff, and at this time we ask that you all keep Kyle and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
According to Inquisitr, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy “did not reveal an immediate cause or manner of death.”
Kirchhoff was a defensive line coach for the College of DuPage.
“He was an incredible guy,”
head football coach Matt Foster told the Chicago Tribune. “The kids loved him. He was a quiet kid, but he had tremendous values. That’s what really stuck out with me. If he was your friend, he was your friend for good.”
According to Foster, Kirchhoff has recently applied for a graduate assistantship in order to earn a master’s degree and get more coaching experience to fulfill his dream of becoming a head college football coach.
“You talk about tragic,” Foster said. “That kid had everything in front of him.”
