Facebook and Instagram went down for about an hour early Tuesday morning, sending Twitter into a tailspin.
Facebook spokeswoman Charlene Chian acknowledged the outage, which
lasted about 52 minutes, CNN reported.
"We're aware that many people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram," Chian told CNN. "We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."
Users attempting to access the sites from PCs and mobile devices in Asia, the United States, Australia, and the
U.K. were affected, USA Today reported.
Facebook explained the outage to USA Today: "Earlier today many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100 percent for everyone."
The outage, which happened shortly after midnight, spawned a hashtag on Twitter, #facebookdown.
