Facebook temporarily blocked a gospel music video from its platform earlier this month, but now the music group behind the song is getting more attention than ever.
Zion's Joy!, a multicultural vocal ensemble from Indianapolis, released a music video to their latest song, “What Would Heaven Look Like,” which featured some scenes of social unrest, The New York Times reported.
Facebook's algorithm flagged the content as “political” and blocked the video completely, according to The Christian Post.
The video has since been reinstated following massive backlash, with heavy criticism aimed at Facebook.
“Facebook has reversed their position and acknowledged that they should not have taken the video down,” the group said in a post on the social network.
“To say that we were disappointed to see that Facebook had removed our video would be a gross understatement,” group member Kay Insley said in a statement. “I have to wonder if the content of the song was truly examined. In a time where the country seems to be more and more divided, we wanted to share a message of hope, love, and universal togetherness. It seems in Facebook’s attempts to curtail questionable content they cracked down on a song trying to bring healing to our nation.”
A Facebook spokeswoman responded to the incident Thursday, stating that the company's political ad policy is “new, broad, and exists to prevent election interference, so we’re asking people with content that falls under those rules to simply get authorized and show who paid for the ad in order for it to run,” The New York Times noted.
“We made an error by deleting the original post,” she continued. “As soon as we identified what happened, we restored the post since it does not violate our Community Standards and have apologized to Zion’s Joy.”
This is just the latest incident for which Facebook has come under fire following the removal of content that it has deemed as political.
Earlier this month the social media platform flagged the Declaration of Independence as hate speech after a Texas community newspaper posted an excerpt to its page in the week leading up to July 4.
