Face Transplant Recipient Appears in GQ Magazine

A face transplant patient is now gracing the pages of GQ magazine alongside the A-list celebrities and male models.

Richard Lee Norris spent more than a decade hiding from the world after a shotgun accident destroyed his entire face from the eyes down in 1997 when he was just 22. Without a nose, lips, tongue, teeth, cheeks, or a lower jaw, Lee shut himself away.

But that all changed two years ago when he became the first person in the U.S. to undergo a full face transplant thanks to a talented surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a 21-year-old donor who had died in a traffic accident.

Now 39, Lee is debuting his new face in the pages of next month's GQ magazine.

"When I was disfigured, just walking the sidewalk, I was surprised that more people didn't walk into telephone poles or break their necks to stare at me," he said. "Now, there's no one paying attention. Unless they know me personally, they don't know I am a face transplant patient. That right there is the goal we had."

Lee's daily struggles now consist of worrying whether his body will reject his new face.

"Every day, I wake up with that fear: Is this the day? The day I'm going to go into a state of rejection that is going to be so bad that the doctors can't change it?"

He takes daily immunosuppressant drugs to stave off that possibility and, in the meantime, he's just happy to have his life back.

"When I look in the mirror," he told GQ, "I see Richard Norris."
