Explosion: North Hollywood Neighborhood Evacuated After Truck Explodes

The explosion of a pickup truck in North Hollywood early Tuesday injured no one but forced police to evacuate a neighborhood, the Los Angeles Times reported.

After the explosion at about 12:30 a.m., emergency personnel found the roof blown off the truck and they could see a propane tank inside, the Times said.

“It was a pretty good boom,” Los Angeles police Sgt. Mike Kammert told the Times, adding that they suspect the propane tank caused the explosion but it is still under investigation.

The area was roped off most of the morning, Kammert said.

NBC Los Angeles said the pickup was parked in someone’s driveway, and the explosion broke windows in nearby houses.

Laura Weir lives nearby and told NBC that she heard the explosion and her dog barked. “The next thing I know, I see the helicopters, I see the fire department,” she said.

A police officer told NBC that they are still investigating whether there was anything criminal tied to the explosion.

Another resident, Clifton Eddie, told ABC in Los Angeles "All the buildings shook, my apartment shook, I thought somebody ran into a car out here.”

Another vehicle explosion in Destin, Fla., in September had a much unhappier ending than this one. A 35-year-old Illinois man was killed and another man was critically injured in what the NWF Daily News said was an accident apparently tied to acetylene torches rented to work on the house. The torches were near the car that exploded.
