Doctors who examined Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry have confirmed the diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma, and the NFL player will begin chemotherapy treatments immediately.

Berry's condition is "very treatable and potentially curable with standard chemotherapy approaches," Dr. Christopher Flowers of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta said in a statement released by the Chiefs. "The goal of Mr. Berry's treatment is to cure his lymphoma."

A first-round pick in 2010, the 25-year-old Berry chose Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute because he lives near Atlanta. He played in the Chiefs' Nov. 20 game at Oakland, but experienced discomfort in his chest following the contest.

Further testing confirmed the initial diagnosis.

Berry released a statement through the team thanking everyone for the outpouring of support.

"My family and I are very grateful for the amount of support we have received over the last couple of weeks," Berry said. "I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement, the blessings and well wishes," the statement read. "I want to thank the Emory University School of Medicine, along with Dr. Flowers and his team, for all of their hard work and effort in diagnosing and creating a plan for me to battle this thing.

"I will embrace this process and attack it the same way I do everything else in life. God has more than prepared me for it. For everyone sharing similar struggles, I'm praying for you and keep fighting!"

There has been no shortage of support for Berry in the past few weeks. Chiefs players and coaches have worn T-shirts bearing the message, "Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Berry." They are also for sale at the team's pro shop at Arrowhead Stadium and on the team's online site with all proceeds going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Players have also tweeted their support, including New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman.
