Emmy Nominations 2015: 'Empire,' 'Mad Men' Expected to Clean Up

By    |   Thursday, 16 Jul 2015 09:37 AM

The nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Eligible nominees include shows and performances that aired between June 1, 2014, and May 31, though if more than half of a series’ episodes ran during that period, the chapters that followed may also be considered, The New York Times reported.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the nominations will be announced by Uzo Aduba from “Orange Is the New Black” and Cat Deely from “So You Think You Can Dance” later than usual in the morning to allow for viewers in the Pacific time zone to watch.

The Emmys celebrate the best shows and performances that appear on television and, more recently, streaming services.

More nominees will be announced this year, as the Television Academy expanded the number of series that can be nominated in the comedy and drama categories from six to seven, the Times noted.

Other changes introduced this year include putting all hour-long shows in the drama category and all half-hour long programs in comedy, according to The New York Times. This impacts Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” which will now be considered a drama though it was nominated as a comedy in 2014.

Another change renames the mini-series category to “limited series,” broadening it to include the usual shorter series like “Wolf Hall” as well as increasingly popular anthology series such as “American Horror Story.”

The variety category has also been split into “variety sketch series” and “variety talk series” to highlight the growth of late-night talk shows and innovative sketch programs.

The New York Times expects AMC’s “Mad Men” to show well in the drama categories after ending its seven-season run this year. The show has been awarded the Emmy for the top drama four times in the past, but no member of the cast has received one of the honors.

None of the big four networks has had shows nominated for best drama since 2011. The New York Times predicts “Empire,” the biggest 2015 hit, may change that, however. The newspaper also speculates that the show’s star, Taraji P. Henson, could be nominated for best actress favorite, providing a chance for an African American to win the prize for the first time.

The award show will be broadcast on Fox Sept. 20 and hosted by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg.
