Emma Thompson's comments in a BBC interview that Harvey Weinstein is a “predator” rather than a sex addict and that he is one of many men in Hollywood who abuse their power rallied thousands of Twitter users who tweeted their support and thanks for her speaking out.
The “Howards End” and “Love Actually” actress didn’t have specific knowledge of Weinstein’s actions, but told BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis she wasn’t surprised about them. Thompson starred in several movies produced by Weinstein’s company, including “Brideshead Revisited” in 2008.
Asked if there were others in Hollywood like Weinstein, she responded, “Of course. Many. Maybe not to that degree. Do they have to all be as bad as him to make it count?”
Thompson said harassment has been going on forever, “since time immemorial.”
“So what we need to start talking about is this crisis in masculinity, the crisis of extreme masculinity,” she added.
Thompson also pointed out “the most powerful man in the world at the moment,” alluding to President Donald Trump, had talked about similar behavior in comments that were leaked to the press just before the 2016 election.
Weinstein is accused of harassing or assaulting nearly 30 women over several decades. His wife Georgina Chapman announced Wednesday she is divorcing him, and People reported he is entering an inpatient treatment facility for sex addiction.
Twitter praised Thompson’s remarks as intelligent and articulate.
