Elton John is set to write the songs for the upcoming Broadway musical, "The Devil Wears Prada."
John's selection for the project was announced by producer Kevin McCollum on Thursday, according to The Associated Press.
“The Devil Wears Prada” was originally a best-selling novel written by author Lauren Weisberger. The story was inspired by Weisberger’s time working as an assistant for Vogue Magazine Editor Anna Wintour.
From there, it hit theaters, becoming a successful film, which starred actors Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Streep would later get nominated for an Oscar in 2007 for her role in the movie.
“Reimagining ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ for the musical theater is super exciting,” John said, according to Rolling Stone. “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
While John will be writing the music for the musical, writer Paul Rudnick will be penning the actual show itself.
According to the producers of the upcoming musical, John and Rudnick were selected to contribute because the show needed “artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,” BBC News noted.
“We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion,” Bob Cohen and Kevin McCollum said.
John has also written music for Broadway musicals, “The Lion King” and “Aida.”
John received a Tony nomination for Best Score for “The Lion King” in 1998, the Rolling Stone noted.
In 2000, the singer won a Tony award for “Aida.”
Details about castings for the musical, its exact location and production dates have yet to be announced.
