Elton John has canceled nearly a dozen shows in Las Vegas and California after contracting a rare bacterial infection in South America that left the 70-year-old legendary performer in a hospital intensive care unit.

His Million Dollar Piano show was scheduled at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace in April and May, along with another concert in Bakersfield on May 6, reported The Guardian.

According to a Caesar's Palace Facebook post, John contracted a "harmful and unusual bacterial infection" during his recent South American tour. On his flight home he became violently ill and his doctors admitted him to a hospital in the UK, where he underwent immediate treatment to remove the infection.

"Infections of this nature are rare and potentially deadly," said the post. "Thankfully, Elton’s medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully. He is expected to make a full and complete recovery."

According to his tour schedule, Sir John isn't expected to perform again until a stop at The Twickenham Stoop in London on June 3.

Caesars Palace's Facebook post detailed the canceled shows.

"I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apologize for disappointing them," John said in the statement. "I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well."

CNN said John's Million Dollar Piano residency has been a regular attraction on the Las Vegas Strip since 2011, treating fans to special effects and large LED screens during his performances. He is expected to continue his residency through May 2018.

Since starting his career in 1970, John has become one of the most successful solo artists of all time, noted his biography. He has recorded 38 gold and 31 platinum or multi-platinum albums, has sold more than 250 million records worldwide.

Many shared their get well wishes on social media.
