Elon Musk revealed that part of his LA tunnel is near completion, and predicted that Los Angeles residents will be able to hitch a ride on it in a few months and avoid the city’s bumper-to-bumper traffic.
"First Boring Company tunnel under LA almost done!" he wrote on Instagram, with a video of a trip through the tunnel. "Pending final regulatory approvals, we will be offering free rides to the public in a few months."
Musk, who is the founder of First Boring Company as well as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, made the announcement Thursday evening.
It’s believed that the digging so far has been in and around L.A.’s Hawthorne area, but it’s not clear from the video.
When completed, the system’s 60 miles of projected tunnel network will be among the largest subway systems in the U.S. Musk gained an environmental review exemption from the City Council public works committee last month for the initial 2.7 mile run through West Los Angeles.
Musk’s decision to embark on the project came in December 2016, when he complained about the city’s snarling traffic. He tweeted:
Musk thanked his supporters — especially those at city hall who gave him the approval.
“Super huge thanks to everyone that helped with this project. Strong support from public, elected officials & regulators is critical to success.”
