Ellen DeGeneres had an election message for her fans on Wednesday's show although she recorded the message on Tuesday before the presidential race was decided.
Wearing a sweater that said “love” on it, DeGeneres encouraged Americans to come together and to focus on what they have in common rather than on what divides them.
“People have been very passionate about this race. And I think it’s because we all love our country — we just have different ideas about what’s best for it, which is part of what makes America great,” the 58-year-old comedian said. “And I believe we can all come together because if you take away the labels, you realize we’re far more alike than we are different.”
DeGeneres said that regardless of an individual’s politics, everyone has shared experiences, such as leaving your towel on the other side of the bathroom before a shower or falling asleep while watching Netflix. She closed by reminding viewers that all are human and deserve “kindness and respect.”
A big supporter of Hillary Clinton, DeGeneres attended many of her fundraisers and interviewing her on “The Ellen Show” last month. Before the final results last night, DeGeneres posted a supportive tweet to her friend that continued to be positive in tone.
DeGeneres took to Twitter Wednesday after the results to both vow to continue to do good in the world and lighten the mood.
