Electric Surfboards Do Away With Waves

High-speed electric surfboards are doing away with waves and making it possible to zip across the water and draw out power carves even when the surf's not up.

At about 25 grand, they’re the latest in stand-up watersports machines using compact electric powertrains to ensure the user gets the excitement of high-speeds out in the water.

Anyone who has ever surfed – or watched surfers – will agree there is nothing more frustrating than no waves, which is common. And when the swell does finally arrive, chances are the lineup will be packed and there will be dozens of other surfers out there fighting to get a wave.

The latest electric surfboard that lets you ride even when the surf is bad is the Awake Ravik.

The full carbon stand-up board comes with a wireless hand-held throttle and can reach speeds of up to 35-mph, New Atlas noted. Orders started being taken on Wednesday.

Right now, the Lampuga Boost is probably the fastest electric surfboard out there, reaching speeds of 36 mph, but the Ravik could very well give that model, which debuted with a retail price of $24,600, a run for its money.

What makes this board so much fun is that you can take it out onto flat, open water and let it ride. And if you fall, it will automatically stop so you do not have to worry about swimming back to shore.

According to Awake, you get 40 minutes riding time on the board after 80 minutes of charging, which is not too bad, and the board is relatively light.

It might not be as cool as a seal riding the back of a whale, but an electric surfboard is still a pretty epic design to play with, even if there's not a killer wave over your shoulder.
