Elderly Poor Wary of Debt Deal

By    |   Thursday, 04 August 2011 10:25 AM EDT

Lower-income seniors have no cause to celebrate the recent signing of the debt deal legislation into law, according to the National Senior Citizens Law Center.

Despite having survived this past round of debt negotiations, programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income are due for slashing should Congress further declare these to be insolvent.

A push by Congress to repeal Obamacare could also endanger the quality of life for those 4 million older Americans living at or near poverty, the law center says.

Congress needs to choose a balanced approach toward reducing spending while ensuring that the nation doesn’t fail the elderly poor in their time of need, according to the law center.

The National Senior Citizens Law Center is a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting the rights of  low-income senior citizens.
