Five Areas Where Education Budget Cuts Hurt Most

By    |   Tuesday, 23 August 2011 07:37 AM EDT

Educators nationwide say children in kindergarten through grade 12, and college students, will be hit hard this year because of steep budget cuts, and the perceived failure of political leaders to set the right spending priorities, according to Stateline.org.

The website lists five education areas expected to suffer because thousands of teachers have lost their jobs and federal money that could have helped keep them on — and fill the gaps in other state-education shortfalls — has dried up:

• Class sizes will be larger, thanks to a loss of teachers and the elimination of some courses that are no longer being offered;

• Some colleges will offer fewer major courses of study;

• More bus routes than ever have been eliminated to save on gas and maintenance expenditures;

• College tuitions have been on the rise for years, but this year look to see a 20 percent increase in some states; and

•Cuts in facility maintenance and other support areas have been deep, as well.
