Ed Sheeran received an award from Prince Charles on Thursday at Buckingham Palace and reportedly broke royal protocol in the process, according to London's Daily Mail.

The two-time Grammy Awards winner touched Prince Charles on the arm while receiving an MBE honor, known as the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, the Daily Mail wrote.

Touching the prince on the elbow uninvited reportedly violated ancient roles guiding commoners and royalty, the newspaper said. Touching the royal family is highly regulated, with the only contact expected to be initiated by the royal and never vice versa.

The protocol boo-boo did not stop Sheeran from expressing to Prince Charles that he wanted to perform for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at their wedding in the spring at Windsor Chapel, the newspaper said.

Prince Charles responded, according to the Daily Mail, "Yeah, why not."

The British singer said he could not help but think about his grandfather Bill during the ceremony, according to the BBC News.

"My grandfather was a massive royalist," Sheeran said, the BBC News reported. "He had all the commemorative plates and stuff, and he died on this day four years ago, so it's actually quite a nice full circle thing, I guess he'd be pretty proud."

When asked what has been his secret to making and selling hit records, Sheeran said it starts with persistence, the BBC News wrote.

"I don't have a vast amount of talent compared to other people, I think talent is like 30 percent of it and persistence, drive and self-belief are the other ones, which I guess are all the same thing," he added.

The native of Halifax, England, who made it big on social media with his online performances before he signed with a record label, has sold millions of records and had a song featured in the movie "The Hobbit," Biography.com wrote.

One of his Grammy awards came for Song of the Year in 2016 for the single "Thinking Out Loud."
