The Easter Bunny has gone high-tech in New York City as the Faberge Big Egg Hunt will feature a search for more than 275 super-sized artistic eggs using a smartphone application.

The nonprofit egg hunt will display the egg sculptures, designed by top artists like Diane von Fustenberg, Ronnie Wood, and Marc Quinn, in “hidden” places across the city, according to the organization’s website.

“The eggs will be ‘hidden’ in public places across all five boroughs, with a magical fairy tale taking hunters on a journey to find them,” the website said.

The giant eggs are about 2.5 feet tall, The Associated Press reported. The location of the eggs will be secret until 10 people log onto the free app, indicating they’ve found an egg. Then the egg locations will show up on an interactive map.

After the events, which include a hunt from April 1 to April 18 and then a display of all the eggs together from April 18 to April 26, the eggs will be auctioned to benefit local charities, the website said. All of the money will go to Studio in a School, an organization that works to bring art to children, and conservation efforts through Elephant Family, which works to save endangered elephants.

Sotheby’s will handle the auction on April 22.

The final egg display is free to the public.

Replicas of some of the eggs, hand-painted on ostrich eggs, will be for sale during the hunt, the Big Egg website said.

London held a Faberge Egg Hunt in 2012 with tremendous success the Big Egg Hunt website said. About 1 million people participated in the hunt, with 100,000 people every day going to see the eggs in the final display. More than $1.5 million was raised for the nonprofits, and foot traffic in the areas where the eggs were located increased 40 percent, the website said.

AP said other cities around the world, including Glasfow, Dublin, and Liverpool, held Big Egg Hunts in 2013.
