NBCUniversal is canceling E! News after 29 years on air and is also pulling the plug on "Pop of the Morning" and Jason Kennedy's celebrity interview series "In the Room."
The decision is partly due to the economic hardship brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and also partly due to a greater effort to re-centralize production in Los Angeles, a spokesperson for E! News said in a statement to USA Today on Thursday. NBCUniversal, which owns E! News, also announced on Tuesday that it was planning on cutting back on its staff.
E! News, which debuted in 1991, intends to keep its website and social media accounts running and will still be filming and airing "Daily Pop" and "Nightly Pop," CNN reported.
Recent E! News host Lilliana Vazquez, who appeared alongside Scott Tweedie, took to social media to acknowledge the news.
"See. I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. Revelations 3:8," she wrote in an Instagram post. "Thankful for this incredible adventure and I will miss this team and crew beyond belief. Yes...even the 4am call time."
Earlier this year it emerged that NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack left his job as part of NBC's massive restructuring operation to combine all television and streaming operations into one unit. It was also reported around the same time that Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, was considering a significant reduction of staff across its portfolio of media and entertainment properties as part of a cost-cutting effort.
