Dyson founder and CEO Sir James Dyson announced to employees Tuesday that the company plans to build an electric car by 2020.
The company is putting its expertise in advanced batteries to work in the new endeavor, but is keeping plans about where it will build vehicles and how it would sell them under wraps for the moment due to intense competition among automakers, USA Today reported.
“The project will grow quickly from here but at this stage we will not release any information,” Dyson said in a letter to employees, USA Today reported. “Competition for new technology in the automotive industry is fierce and we must do everything we can to keep the specifics of our vehicle confidential.”
The British consumer electrics company called its project a “premium” electric car and said it would invest $2.7 billion into the car and battery technology, Forbes reported. Dyson predicted that the automotive part of the business would “quickly” outgrow the vacuum segment as the project unfolded.
Dyson also said that the car would be “radically different” than current electric vehicles on the market and that it would probably be expensive, The Verge reported.
Twitter commenters were generally supportive, although the detractors also had a lot to say.
