A group of Jewish teens in Massachusetts did not hesitate to help save the life of a drowning man despite the glaring swastika tattoo on his hand.

The unlikely heroes, four students from an Orthodox Jewish high school in Brookline, were walking along the Chestnut Hill Reservoir when they noticed the body of a man partially submerged in the murky waters, NBC Boston reported, not naming the teens.

It was not clear how the man had ended up in the reservoir but police later said he was close to death and would not have survived if the teens had not acted. Two of the students ran off to find help, eventually coming across the patrol car of Boston College police officer Carl Mascioli.

Together they rushed back to the scene, where Mascioli hauled the man from the water. Days later the man is making a full recovery thanks to the combined efforts of Mascioli and the four students.

"I kind of let the gentlemen know sometimes some deeds have a funny way of turning around," Mascioli later said. "Their good deed had a little bit of a twist to it."

The patrolman said the selfless act should inspire others to set aside their differences and lend a helping hand.

"A good deed is a good deed and that's part of life," he said. "We should be helping everybody out."
