Tuesday, 06 December 2011 10:48 AM EST

The U.S. drone now in the hands of Iran’s military was being used by the CIA and officials say the unmanned aircraft was one of the more sophisticated ones designed to evade enemy detection, The Washington Post reported.

The drone has been identified as a RQ-170 and has been used by the CIA for such sensitive missions as the surveillance of Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.

Initial reports had identified the drone as one on a relatively routine mission by the military, the Post reported.

The RQ-170 is made by Lockheed Martin and comes equipped with a special coating and shape designed to evade detection, the Post reported.
