A drone found a mountain climber who was missing and presumed dead in the Himalayas, allowing a rescue team to find him and save his life.

Mountaineer Rick Allen from Scotland was climbing down from the summit of 26,401-foot Broad Peak when he fell off an ice cliff, BBC News reported.

A base camp cook saw Allen’s backpack and alerted other climbers in the area, then the drone was used to locate him, the BBC reported. The drone belongs to Polish climber Bartek Bargiel, and was able to find Allen and guide rescuers to him.

Allen had cuts from falling off the cliff and some frostbitten toes, but was otherwise unharmed. He told the BBC he had always considered drones “irritating” while he was climbing, “but this has changed my perception of them.”

“A number of people had assessed the situation and come to the conclusion that I was not going to come back,” he said, the BBC reported.

Sandy Allan, a long-time climbing partner, confirmed that. “We were convinced he was dead,” she said, according to the BBC.

Allan was climbing Broad Peak with Allen but had turned back because of high winds. Allen then decided to make the ascent solo.

Allen was on the mountain for 36 hours before the drone spotted him, the BBC reported.

Allen had lost part of his big toe to frostbite on an earlier climb, the BBC reported.

Allen and Allan are well-known mountaineers who in 2012 climbed the peak of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan via the Mazeno Ridge, which was considered the last great unclimbed route in the Himalayas.

Broad Peak is the 12th-tallest mountain in the world.
