A Florida woman charged with killing her friend in a drunk-driving accident sent angry texts to her ex-boyfriend minutes before crashing: “Driving drunk woo. I’ll be dead thanks to you.”
The texts were just a few of the 60 sent by Mila Dago, 22, to her ex-boyfriend, the Miami Herald reported. The couple had just broken up and Dago was out on the town in Miami with her friend, Irina Reinoso, 22, to commiserate.
But when Dago, with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit, blew through a red light in her Smart car and collided with a truck, she didn’t die. Instead, Reinoso lost her life.
The driver of the truck, Benjamin Byrum, 51, was knocked unconscious, the Herald said.
Reinoso’s family is suing Dago and also the company Car2Go, the car-sharing company from which Dago got the Smart car.
Dago is charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and two counts of DUI with damage to a person, the Herald said.
Within the barrage of text messages aimed at her ex, identified only as DJ in court hearings, was another, “You’ll be the death of me.”
Instead, Dago caused the death of her friend. “Ms. Dago, who, with her family, prays every day for the young woman who passed and her family, believes it is disrespectful to the young woman’s family to publicly comment,” her defense attorney David Rothman told the Herald.
As stories about the texts Dago sent went around the Internet, many went online to express their disgust.
