While many people are struggling to get by, Drake has taken luxury spending to a new level by recently dropping $390,000 on a mattress made from horsehair. News of his latest splurge broke last week when the rapper gave a tour of his luxury apartment. His lavish 50,000-square-foot home in Toronto drew attention but it was ultimately his mattress made by the Swedish company Hästens that made headlines.

Justifying the exuberant purchase, Hästens’ Los Angeles store manager, Linus Adolfsson, explained to Vice that sleeping was about self-care.

"Your mattress should be the most important piece of furniture in your home. In Sweden, if your couch costs more than your mattress, people won't understand. We have a completely different attitude to sleeping," he said.

Only a dozen mattresses like the one Drake owns were made in the first run and there is already a waiting list. What makes them so special is the way in which they are produced.

Each mattress is handmade by four certified craftsmen who work roughly 600 hours to produce the final product, which is made from cotton, flax, wool and horsehair and features springs arranged specifically according to height, size and structure.

"The springs are like… just imagine that you're a huge rock star and you stage dive into the crowd," Adolfsson explained. "If you're in an arena and everyone reaches up to catch you, you feel like you're floating, and you don't feel each individual hand. But if you try that with five friends, it's a different story."

Production has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but sales of other Hästens mattresses have increased in the last few weeks. Adolfsson reasons this is because they allow for better sleep which in turn impacts the immune system.

"Self-care, sleep, building up the immune system, those are all important things right now," he said.

Drake must have known this when he bought a mattress that costs more than a house.
