Dr. Oz will serve on the Trump administration's sports council alongside several other celebrities, Newsweek reported.
The White House announced on Sunday that Mehmet Oz, the host of the popular medical talk show "The Dr. Oz Show," would join a team of 20 members on the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition for a term of two years.
Oz confirmed the news on social media.
"I've been supporting children's health programs with @HealthCorps and appreciate the need to improve lifestyle opportunities for our youth," he tweeted Sunday. "Serving on @FitnessGov offers a platform to amplify the best practices shown to work across our school systems."
Earlier this year Trump signed an executive order to rebrand the council to include various sports celebrities in an effort to appeal to children and encourage them to take up sporting activities, Axios reported.
The council includes New York Yankee Mariano Rivera, NFL running back Herschel Walker, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, golfer Natalie Gulbis and volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor, Newsweek noted.
Oz's inclusion on the board has drawn skepticism from some amid ongoing controversy surrounding the cardiac surgeon from New Jersey.
The Los Angeles Times previously reported that nearly four in 10 of the assertions made on "The Dr. Oz Show" have no evidence to back them up.
