A huge fire in a tall residential structure under construction in downtown Los Angeles closed down portions of two major freeways nearby on Monday morning.

The Associated Press reported Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz as saying more than 250 firefighters were battling the blaze early Monday morning.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the fire could be seen for miles.

Two other nearby buildings were also damaged by the fire.

"Large windows gave under the amount of heat," said a firefighter. "There was active fire on three floors."

The 110 Freeway northbound remained closed, but Caltrans reopened the 101 and 110 southbound at around 4:30 a.m.
