Dooagh Beach on western Ireland’s Achill Island has reappeared after being washed away 33 years ago during a series of storms.
The sand was washed away from the beach in 1984, and only rocks stood where the sand used to be. But this year around Easter, a freak tide apparently caused hundreds of tons of sand to be deposited back onto the beach, leaving it much as it used to be before 1984.
The small village has been attracting lots of tourists since the beach reappeared, which is bolstering local businesses like Achill Tourism and restaurants in the area.
“We have a beautiful little village as it is, but it is great to look out and see this beautiful beach instead of rocks,” local restauranteur Alan Gielty told The Guardian. “Since people have seen the news of the beach, we have had plenty more visitors from the middle of the country.”
Sean Molloy of Achill Tourism urged caution at the reappeared beach, though.
“Because of the sand coming in, we don’t know how safe the beach is now because the currents could be changed and it’ll take a little bit of time,” he said, CNN reported.
For now, locals and tourists are enjoying walking along the new sandy beach, especially with the recent stretch of warm weather the island has seen, and are hoping both the beach and the weather will last a while longer.
