Dog Adopted After Five Years at Shelter, Spends Easter With Family

A pit bull mix dog was adopted from a New York shelter after five years when a photo of him with a sign begging for a new family went viral.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League in Southold, New York, posted a picture on Facebook of Chester, age 6, with a sign that said, “Why doesn’t anybody want me? I’ve been waiting 5 years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family. I sit and wait for you to come.”



The heartfelt plea soon had the shelter overwhelmed with phone calls, the shelter staff said.

“There were more phone calls then I can count; the phone just never stopped. People called from Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Michigan, Oregon, New Jersey Wisconsin, Nova Scotia, Australia and more — people were tearing up as they called," NFAWL manager Gabby Stroup told WDBO.

The winning family was that of Dana and Adi Dor, who have two boys and live in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York.

Chester was adopted within a matter of days. On Saturday, Dana Dor, her husband Adi, and their boys, Aidan and Brandon, took Chester to their Lake Ronkonkoma, New York home so he can start his new life as a member of the family.

The Dor family sent photos of Chester’s Easter celebration to the shelter.
