A doctor who slipped an abortion pill into his girlfriend’s iced tea and caused her to miscarry the baby was sentenced Friday to three years in prison.
Former D.C.-area doctor Sikander Imran pleaded guilty earlier this year to fetal homicide, admitting that in May 2017 he put 800 mg of Misoprostol into Brooke Fiske’s drink and caused her to miscarry their child at 17 weeks, The Washington Post reported.
Imran and Fiske dated on and off in New York where the both lived at the time. As Imran was moving to D.C. to work at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Fiske discovered she was pregnant, the Post reported.
During a meeting to discuss how they were going to raise their child, Imran admitted he put the medication into her drink to cause the miscarriage, People reported. Fiske saw the grit from the ground up pill in the cup and figured out what had happened.
The maximum sentence for fetal homicide is 40 years, but Imran was sentenced to 20 years with 17 years suspended after Fiske asked the judge for leniency for Imran.
“I think that when something tragic happens, it is really important to find a way to move forward and to use it for good,” Fiske said, WJLA reported.
“To me, the length of time that he serves in prison isn’t what’s important,” Fiske continued. “I think that it’s really important that people know that if they are dealing with depression before they do something, they should reach out and get help.”
Imran’s attorney argued that he was mentally unstable when he put the pill in Fiske’s drink, WJLA reported.
