The Democratic National Committee requested resignations from all current staffers as new chairman Tom Perez tries to recreate the troubled party headquarters with a clean slate.

Perez is the third DNC chairman since this past summer with the resignation of former chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz after revelations from the party's hacked email accounts, NBC News noted. Veteran party operative Donna Brazile acted as interim chairman before Perez was elected.

"This is longstanding precedent at the DNC and has happened during multiple Chair transitions," committee spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said of the resignations in a statement, according to NBC News. "The process was started before the election of the new chair.

"From the beginning, Tom has been adamant that we structure the DNC for future campaigns. Current and future DNC staff will be integral to that effort. Over the last few months, the DNC staff has done incredible work under immense pressure to hold Trump accountable."

Over the eight years of President Barack Obama, the Democrats went from having a majority in the House and a super majority in the Senate, to losing all three branches. After the November election, Republicans also own 33 governorships and 69 of 99 legislative bodies, according to The Washington Post.

Perez, who served as labor secretary under in the Obama administration, edged out Minnesota U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, who was backed by former presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, for the party chairmanship. Perez, in turn, named Ellison as vice chair.

"The last month hasn't been easy for Democrats," Perez said in a statement on his website. "But now isn't the time to despair – it's time to organize and fight. In the years ahead, we must strengthen our team, and our bench, from the ground up. And we must stand up to protect President Obama's accomplishments.

"But most of all, we need to listen. We need to listen to Democrats at every level, empowering them to fight for progressive values and a vision of opportunity and optimism. And we need to listen to voters, up and down the ballot, who are asking us to stand behind them," he continued.

The DNC said it will conduct a national search for key party positions currently overseen by roughly 30 members of a transition advisory committee, NBC News reported. Progressives complained about the initial makeup of the transition committee, leading the DNC to add several more members from the left, wrote NBC News.
