A disabled woman had her nails painted by a Walmart cashier on her break after a salon operating within the location turned the woman away.
Angela Peters told WNEM the Da-Vi Nail Salon in a Burton, Michigan, Walmart turned her away because her cerebral palsy made her move too much. Aa salon representative said it was a time crunch, not her condition, CBS News reported.
Whatever the reason for the refusal, it was witnessed by Ebony Harris, who had seen Peters shopping at the store numerous times before. So Harris bought some nail polish at the store and painted Peters’ nails on her break, WNEM reported.
Tasia Smith, who works in a Subway location also inside the store, helped Harris and filmed the event, which went viral online.
“If you see someone that’s going through something and they need help, help them,” Smith told WNEM.
All three said they didn’t want to bash the salon, just create awareness so people with disabilities would be treated with kindness and respect.
“I forgive the nail people for not doing my nails,” Peters told ABC News in a statement. “When people do us wrong we must forgive, if not we harbor bitterness. I don’t want anyone fired, I just [want to] educate people.”
“We’re not trying to bash anybody, anybody lose their business or anything but create an awareness,” Harris told WNEM.
Peters, who is is wheelchair bound but owns her own business and is an artist and poet, was happy to be “making new friends at Walmart” as well, WNEM reported.
