Two designers have decided to give free sleeping bags to the homeless in Washington, D.C.
Kendall Haley and Daniel Wilson of the brand FADED Ambition set up a GoFundMe page that has raised $3,000, enough for at least 100 sleeping bags.
The most recent census showed there were around 7,500 people homeless in D.C., which has a population of almost 700,000.
Many of the city’s homeless stay in shelters, especially in the winter, but a Washington Post story said that as of January 2017, about 900 people were sleeping on the streets on even the coldest nights. Mayor Muriel Bowser has promised to cut down on the number of homeless in D.C. since her election.
Haley and Wilson have handed out the waterproof sleeping bags themselves, and have challenged famous singers and artists on social media to help them in the distribution. So far, only Rapper Fatboy SSE has taken them up on the challenge.
“We can do 100 challenges, if no one accepts the challenge, it’s not going to stop us from helping anyone,” Haley told Fox News. “The bigger picture is to help people and spread awareness.”
One of the people they helped was Dallas Sanderson, a former cocaine addict who has quit drinking and using drugs, but has had trouble finding enough work to afford rent.
“Not everybody who’s homeless ... is a total lost cause,” Sanderson said, Fox News reported. “I don’t do any hard drugs whatsoever. I don’t drink hard liquor.”
Sanderson appreciated the sleeping bag Haley and Wilson gave him.
“It could mean the difference between me having a decent night’s sleep, and sleeping somewhere with nothing but my coat for a blanket,” he said.
