Desert Sunlight Solar Farm, World's Largest, Opens in California

The California sun is now heating up the Desert Sunlight Solar Farm, the world’s largest solar power plant, which generates enough energy to power 160,000 homes.

More than 150 officials, including Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, were at the plant located in Riverside County, California, on Monday to commission the 550-megawatt solar project, The Desert Sun reported.

"When you are stepping out with new technology, when you are trying something that has been untested before, a loan guarantee program from an organization like the Department of Energy is what provides you, as a lender, that certainty that you can step up and support the project," Jewell told The Desert Sun.

The project received an almost $1.5 billion loan through a federal loan program that has come under extensive criticism, particularly after a supported project, Solyndra, failed in 2011.

The Department of Energy said in 2014 that it is projected to make a $5 billion to $6 billion project on the project, the Sun said. It will do so through five large-scale solar farms, the last of which was Desert Sunlight.

“They're all rock-solid, money is good, living up to every kind of condition we put in the loan documents in terms of performance, in terms of commercial operation," Peter Davidson, executive director of the Department of Energy's loan programs office, told the Sun.

Desert Sunlight holds the spot as the worlds’ large solar plant, barely edging out San Luis Obispo County’s project, The Topaz.

Both projects were built by First Solar, an Arizona company. Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is owned by NextEraEnergy Resources, GE Energy Financial Services, and Sumitomo Corp. of America.

The farm will displace about 300,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, which the site said was the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road.
