Derrius Guice, an NFL prospect, told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday he was asked by a team rep at the recent Scouting Combine if he “liked men,” Sports Illustrated reported.
“Some people are really trying to get in your head and test your reaction,” the Louisiana State University running back said, per Sporting News.
“I'd go in one room and a team would ask me, ‘Do I like men?' just to see my reaction. They'd try to bring up one of my family members or somebody and tell me, ‘Hey, man, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?' Just random stuff like that, man, to see how you respond.”
Looking into the allegations, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said he confirmed the line of questioning with a source, who said Guice had been asked about his sexual orientation.
NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told USA Today on Thursday that the league was investigating the matter.
“A question such as that is completely inappropriate and wholly contrary to league workplace policies,” McCarthy said.
“The NFL and its clubs are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all employees in a manner that is consistent with our commitment to diversity and inclusion, state and federal laws and the CBA.”
McCarthy said the league often reminded its clubs of these policies “that prohibit personnel from seeking information concerning a player’s sexual orientation.”
It’s not the first time such questions have been posed to NFL athletes.
Sports Illustrated noted that former Colorado tight end Nick Kasa was asked if he “likes girls” in 2013, while in 2016 cornerback Eli Apple said he was asked a similar question.
