Derek Fisher, who is in his first season as coach of the New York Knicks, has filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years.
"This is a difficult time for me personally. For the sake of our children, I ask that everyone respects our privacy during this process,"
Fisher said in a statement to The Associated Press.
Fisher and his wife Candace were married on Feb. 19, 2005. They have four children: twins Tatum and Drew, and one child each from previous relationships.
Derek Fisher filed for divorce in Los Angeles,
citing irreconcilable differences, TMZ reported. He is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the children and to split the legal costs.
Tatum underwent cancer treatment for retinoblastoma as an infant, while Fisher played for the Utah Jazz.
Fisher spent most of his basketball career playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
His decision to move to New York was a big topic for the family,
Candace Fisher told the New York Daily News last year.
“We’re still discussing it,” she said at the time. “I guess it’s fine. It just happened really fast, so here we are.”
News of the divorce surprised some, coming on the heels of an anniversary tribute Fisher posted last month on Instagram.
Twitter users commented about the split.
