Deputy Sheriff Jeff Athey was fired on the spot for robbing a bank, allegedly, before his Tuesday afternoon shift started in North Carolina’s Davidson County.
Athey was arrested in his silver Mustang getaway car after being chased from neighboring Rowan County where the F&M Bank in Rockwell was held up at gunpoint, WFMY News reported.
Investigators said Athey walked into the bank, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. It was unclear how much money he fled with, but police said it was all recovered and nobody was injured, USA Today reported.
“I’m as shocked and appalled as anyone else about Mr. Athey’s behavior,” said Davidson County Sheriff David Grice, per the International Business Times.
“We’re not going to tolerate this kind of behavior, obviously, and we don’t tolerate anybody who violates the law or violates the policies at the sheriff’s office,” said Grice. “They’re not going to be employed with me if they do.”
Athey had worked for Grice for several years, according to WFMY, and was responsible for prisoner transport.
Grice said there was never any indication that Athey was capable of “this type of behavior,” per IBT.
