Dennis Quaid has been signed to play Ronald Reagan in a biopic that will explore the former president's life and career, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Dubbed "Reagan," the $21 million film has been in the works for a long time and will be released next summer.

At the helm of the feature film is producer Mark Joseph who will take audiences on a journey through Reagan's childhood and adult years, tackling his presidency from 1981 to 1989, as well as his time as California governor.

The film will take a close look at the 40th U.S. president's role in the destruction of the Berlin Wall and will examine his final days struggling with Alzheimer's disease.

There’s a lot of other territory to cover, too, including his years with the Screen Actors Guild and the John Hinckley Jr. affair.

Reagan's years as president ultimately led to the restoration of prosperity and brought within reach the goal of peace through strength.

David Henrie, best known for his role as teenager Justin Russo in the kid's show "Wizards of Waverly Place," will play Reagan as a young man. Jon Voight also has a role in the film.

Quaid, 64, is on the second season of Amazon's psychological thriller "Fortitude," and just finished the Christian film "I Can Only Imagine" that has earned $83 million on a $7 million budget, THR said.

Quaid has experience portraying presidents. He played President Bill Clinton in the HBO film "The Special Relationship" in 2010. And, Quaid was cast as former President George W. Bush in the FX limited series "Katrina: American Crime Story," so many say he has proven his versatility as an actor.

The Reagan role, however, is certain to raise questions of whether Quaid can do justice to the character of a man hailed by so many as a hero.

Megyn Kelly viewers will soon get an inking as she is planning to interview Quaid at the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara for her NBC show, according to sources. She plans to ask about his decision to play Reagan.

As The Guardian reported, Quaid's career has been plagued by numerous box-office duds, scandals and drug addiction.

Joseph is confident of his choice of Quaid.

"Dennis was always our first choice. He's one of the great actors of our time," Joseph told THR.

"Reagan was a fascinating and multi-faceted human being and this movie captures his humanity," Quaid said, according to THR. "We're making a movie for Republicans and Democrats alike since Reagan transcends politics. I can't wait to get started."

To accurately portray the details of Reagan’s life, Joseph has put a lot of time and effort into meeting with, and interviewing, well over 50 of Reagan's friends, confidantes and cabinet members.

There are several prominent names working on the film.

Overseeing directing is Sean McNamara, who worked on "Soul Surfer" and "The Miracle Season." Ralph Winter, who worked on the "X-Men" film franchise, will take on the role of executive producer.

Edwin Meese, who worked for Reagan for decades, is an unofficial adviser.

"Reagan" is written by Howie Klausner and is based on two biographies from author Paul Kengor, THR added.
