Robert De Niro pays a high amount in income taxes, and the actor wants GOP presumptive nominee Mitt Romney to write a larger check to the IRS.
In an interview that was broadcast on Monday with CNN’s Piers Morgan, the host brought up the subject of income taxes. When De Niro was asked whether or not he supports President Barack Obama’s tax proposal, which is also being referred to as the “Buffett Rule,” the actor replied, “I absolutely do.”
The so-called Buffett Rule would apply a minimum tax of 30 percent to individuals who make more than a million dollars a year.
“As far as, again, the middle class, just having the opportunity that it should have, the taxes being paid compared to the people who have a lot of money, is ridiculous sometimes,” De Niro said. “You hear about some people, the taxes they don't pay, is like, insane.”
When speaking about his own tax bill, De Niro apparently could not resist bringing Romney’s name into the discussion.
De Niro said he himself already pays “an enormous amount of taxes.”
“I'll do whatever I have to do, whatever's fair,” he added. “With some people, even people like Romney, from what I've seen, the taxes he pays are kind of astounding, really.”
“Astoundingly low?” Morgan inquired.
“Low, yeah, very low,” De Niro replied.
