De'Marquise Elkins, Accused of Shooting Baby in Head, Hid Gun: Witnesses

De'Marquise Elkins, the Georgia teenager accused of fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby in the head earlier this year, reportedly hid the murder weapon under a relative's couch before his mother and sister disposed of it in a nearby pond, witnesses testified Monday.

Elkins, 18, of Brunswick, Ga., is on trial for murder, aggravated assault, attempted robbery, and other charges after police say he shot a baby in the head in March after trying to rob the toddler's mother.

Dominique Lang, 15, is also being tried as a co-defendant, but he maintains that Elkins was the shooter, according to Jacksonville.com.

Danielle Williams, Elkins' distant cousin and close family friend, testified Monday that the teen came to her apartment the day after the shooting and asked to hide his revolver under a loveseat. Later that day, she said, Karimah and Sabrina Elkins, De'Marquise's mother and sister, came by and retrieved the gun.

Another family friend, Willie Merrell, testified that he picked up the mother and daughter duo that afternoon and took them to a fishing pond where he catches bass. Merrell testified that he heard a splash — presumably the gun being dumped — but didn’t see anything, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Investigators later recovered the gun with a metal detector.

Karimah Elkins is on trial for lying to police and tampering with evidence, while Sabrina Elkins also faces charges for evidence tampering.

If convicted, Elkins faces life in prison. At the time of the shooting he was 17 and too young to face the death penalty under Georgia law.
